Prospective Students Opportunities
Dr. Li welcomes applications from highly motivated students interested in pursuing graduate studies in one of two fields: (1) Civil and Environmental Engineering (2) Materials Engineering. Openings currently exist for teaching and research assistantships on various projects. Preference will be given to applicants who are strongly committed to completing a Ph.D.
Students from any of the following multidisciplinary backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Nanomaterials and nanocomposites, sensing materials and sensors
- Material characterization techniques, e.g. mechanical testing, SEM, TEM, XRT, impedance spectroscopy, elemental analysis
- Fiber reinforced composite materials, their characterization, durability and structural application
- Structural Engineering and Mechanics
- Systems analysis and operations research, life cycle assessment, industrial ecology

Research Interests
Dr. Li's research focuses on creating and implementing ultra-damage-resistant and multifunctional composite materials for protective and resilient structures and built environments. Her research group engages in interdisciplinary research linking composite materials science, biomimicry, structural mechanics & health monitoring, and industrial ecology to develop and implement new sustainable materials and systems. Research topics include:
- Development of new multifunctional structural materials and biomimetic materials for damage tolerance, healing, sensing and light weightness
- Engineered Cementitous Composites (ECC), strain-hardening and ductile cementitious composite materials: (1) development of new versions of ECC materials for specific infrastructure applications, (2) characterization of material behavior under combined environmental exposure and mechanical loading conditions, (3) development of multiaxial constitutive models, (4) structural engineering using ECC
- Materials characterization under harsh environment and loading conditions, service life prediction
- Corrosion in reinforced concrete and metallic structures, accelerated corrosion in repairs.
- Assessment of infrastructure sustainability using industrial ecology approaches (e.g., life cycle analysis, material flow analysis, environmental input-output analysis) and complex systems modeling and network analysis methods.
